Know the Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Did you know that over half the South African population could potentially suffer from dry eyes? It’s no surprise as we live in a hot and dry climate. Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Dry eyes may occur if you don’t produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears. It can feel very uncomfortable and without proper management, impede on the quality of your vision and life.

Some symptoms include:

-Itchy eyes

-Sore eyes

-Blurred vision

-Burning sensation

-Eye redness

-Difficulty with nigh-time driving

-Stringy mucus in or around your eyes

Another common symptom is something called a foreign body sensation, the feeling that some object or material is in your eye, and as odd as it may sound, watery eyes also can be a symptom of dry eye syndrome. This is because dryness on the eyes surface sometimes will over-stimulate production of the watery component of your tars as a protective mechanism. But this ‘’reflex tearing’’ does not stay on the eye long enough to correct the underlying dry eye condition. In addition to these symptoms, dry eyes can cause inflammation and ( sometimes permanent) damage to the surface of the eye.
